MIAMI (CBSMiami/AP) – More and more Florida drivers have had their licenses revoked because they were not physically or mentally fit to get behind the wheel.
State figures show the number of people who had their licenses revoked for these reasons has more than double in the last decade. The main reasons why many have lost their driving privileges were related to dementia, stroke and seizures.
Last year, the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles revoked 7,716 licenses for medical reasons compared to 3,559 in 2000.
Part of the reason for the increase is because of a little-known Florida law which allows anyone to notify the state about motorists with physical or mental conditions that might impact their driving. Many revocations started with reports from family members.
